Source Code
Most of our books come with source code.
Any piece of code, whether it's a program snippet, the design
surfaces for forms or reports, or scripts, should be included
electronically so that the reader doesn't have to create them
by hand. It's a convenience to the reader that most everyone
expects.
As you write, you should have drafts of
the code you use as you write the book, and then use the time
while the book is in layout and printing to produce the final
source code files. Tech edit will need to review those; nothing
is more aggravating to a reader than to find the source code
doesn't run, or doesn't match the text. But the final version
of the source code is not due at the time the chapter is submitted
for copy editing.
Source code is due at the time the book starts shipping. There's
usually about a month between the time the final chapter has
been sent to layout and the books land on customer's doorsteps,
so that's when the source code needs to get finished up.
How to reference source code in your book and
how to package source code for download is described in detail in the HWP Style
Guide.
