GLGDW 2006 Hotel
Description: The Hyatt Regency in downtown Milwaukee has been the host hotel for GLGDW each year since the conference's inception in 1994.
Over 400
rooms on 18 floors are laid out in the classic atrium style Hyatt layout. The restaurant, Polaris, on the top
of the hotel is Wisconsin's only revolving dining experience (unless you count the spinning and
nausea after leaving Real Chili on Kilbourn.) Important! Reserve Your Room Now! The Hyatt Regency has reserved a limited number of rooms at a special conference price of about $115 for GLGDW attendees. Once that special block is sold out, they're gone. If you've got an AARP membership or an AAA membership, you may be able to get a different deal. We've heard rumours that people have gotten close to the same GLGDW price with one of those discount programs. However, once these are sold out, any remaining rooms at the Hyatt will probably be sold at a higher price. Why? Because this is the way the "hospitality" industry works - the customer be damned, pretty much like the airline business. Seriously, in order to secure this 'special discounted rate', I have guarantee that they'll all sell - and if they don't, I have to pay for the rooms anyway. One year I overestimated, and ended up paying the Hyatt over $10,000 for empty rooms. And, as you probably have figured out, GLGDW isn't run by some big, faceless corporation with deep pockets - it's just me, and that was a lot of money for fork over for nothing.....
So reserve your rooms early! Overflow hotels: What if the Hyatt sells out? (It has each of the last three GLGDWs!) There are a number within walking distance (two to five blocks downtown). The Wyndham and Pfister are more expensive, and the Pfister is the furthest away - about six or seven blocks. The others are within a couple blocks (Hyatt is 300 West, and Wisconsin, Michigan are two or three blocks south/parallel to Kilbourn.)
